Welcome to my Portfolio!

My name is Charles Twiggs Miller (Twiggs is my middle and preferred name). I am currently working as a Language and Culture Assistant in the Autonomous Community of Madrid in Spain. My school is located in the small, outlying municipality of Rivas-Vaciamadrid, about 20-30 minutes outside the city by bus.

I am originally from outside of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, the United States. I spent my childhood there until I moved to Massachusetts to attend Berkshire School for high school. After that, I attended university at the University of San Francisco where I majored in Spanish Studies, graduating in the Fall semester of 2017 after taking a few years off to work.

I am a relatively new English teacher, but I have a bit of experience with foreign language learning. During high school I was able to take part of several different language learning programs such as firstly studying in Ecuador the summer of 2005, mainly in Cuenca at the Center for Interamerican Studies (CEDEI), and a spring break in Spain in 2006. During my junior year I spent the school year studying in Zaragoza, Spain, with the program School Year Abroad (SYA). I worked as an individual and group peer tutor for Spanish at the University of San Francisco. There I worked with the Modern & Classical Languages Department as a Group Conversation Peer Tutor and with the Learning, Writing & Speaking Centers as an Individual Peer Tutor, both for Spanish language.

This is my second year working as a Language and Culture Assistant. I worked last year with the BEDA Programme, in conjunction with Escuelas Católicas de Madrid and the Universidad de Comillas, in a concertado in the neighbourhood in Carabanchel Alto, Madrid.

I have learned so much in the last year and in the last couple of months working as a Language and Culture Assistant. This is the third different age group I have taught, having tutored fellow college students at University and primary school last year. I have been able to incorporate the different strategies I have learned over the course of my life to help teach younger people to teach English. This has been a fascinating, challenging, enriching and rewarding experience and I am excited to see how this journey progresses!
